A Wellness Facility in DC? Meet The Plan To Boost Tourism in the City

On May 11, D.C. officials announced an exciting collaboration with the Therme Group to introduce a wellness facility in the city, with amenities such as a water park, indoor pool and sauna. The announcement comes as domestic tourism experiences a significant upswing. Over 21 million visitors flocked to Washington D.C. in 2022. This influx marked a remarkable 10% increase from the previous year.

During Destination D.C.’s Travel Rally at Franklin Square Park, Mayor Muriel Bowser highlighted the pivotal role of tourism in the city’s economy, especially amidst the ongoing recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Domestic tourism has rebounded to 91% of pre-pandemic levels. Visitors injected a staggering $8.1 billion into the local economy and generated over 84,000 jobs. While international tourism is gradually picking up pace, further efforts are being made to promote D.C. in existing markets and expand its reach in Asia.

In a move that will undoubtedly shape the city’s tourism landscape, Mayor Bowser unveiled an ambitious partnership with the prestigious Therme Group. The group is an Austria-based operator of renowned well-being resorts. This collaboration aims to bring a transformative health and well-being facility to D.C. The resort intends to offer visitors and residents an unparalleled resort-like experience.

A Wellness Facility in the Heart of DC

The Therme Group, acclaimed for its successful operations in Romania and Germany, specializes in creating immersive wellness destinations. D.C. residents and tourists can anticipate a facility spanning between 450,000 to 600,000 square feet, according to the Washington Post. It will boast a range of amenities designed to promote well-being. From indulgent spa treatment techniques to a cutting-edge “next-generation waterpark” featuring tropical-themed attractions, the envisioned well-being facility promises guests a “Caribbean-like experience” in the heart of D.C.

The partnership agreement sets forth a comprehensive 12-month plan. Therme Group will collaborate with city officials to identify an ideal location within D.C. to house this transformative wellness facility. Notably, the agreement stipulates that Therme Group will refrain from exploring options in neighboring Maryland and Virginia. The goal is to underscore D.C.’s commitment to securing this exclusive partnership.

While specific details regarding financial support from the city are yet to be disclosed, the collaboration between D.C. officials and the Therme Group signifies an unwavering commitment to enhancing the city’s tourism offerings and fostering a culture of well-being for both residents and visitors.

This tourism-driven revitalization program is in line with Mayor Bowser’s “Comeback Plan” for D.C. The plan, unveiled earlier this year, aims to bolster the city’s recovery efforts. The plan includes strategies to increase downtown residency and foster job growth in high-demand industries. Strengthening tourism, particularly with the introduction of the wellness facility, is a key component of the plan, D.C. officials said. It will further solidify D.C.’s status as a dynamic and thriving destination.
